An inside look at the story progression of "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" and how a single idea went from script to concept sketches.

"The Boy who Laughs at Rain": The Beginning

"The Boy who Laughs at Rain" tells the story of a silly boy, Sunni, who is berated by his moody friend, Maud, for laughing at a rain storm. Sunni and Maud's story is the brain child of director Peterson Muldoon, and even though there has been quite a few changes since the day it was greenlit, the story of "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" still carries the same passion that it did when it was first pitched by Peterson on day one.

The Real Start of the Story: The Script

The second stage to really map out the story was to create the script. Our amazing director Peterson worked alongside incredible script writer Travis Lee to create a four page script for the animated short. This script was written and re-written many times before arriving at a final version that told the story that we wanted to tell.

When creating the interior living space for "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" the goal was to create a cozy, fun living space that would contrast nicely with the wild rainstorm outside.

Animation

An inside look at the animation of "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" and how our talented team of animators went from storyboards to finalized animation.

Animation: From Storyboard to Composite

Prehaps the biggest undertaking in our film was the animation. In order to animate "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" our skilled crew went through the storyboard, rough animation, clean-up, color and composite process with each of the shots.

The first step of the animation process was editing together storyboard panels in order to get the timing of the movements correct.

Sound/Music

An inside look at the sound and music of film and how our talented sound team created unique sounds to help tell the story of "The Boy who Laughs at Rain"

Music/Sound: Setting the Score

Just as important as the visuals for the film is the sound! With music, sound effects and narration, "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" had the additional challenge of being a pretty noisy film- so getting everything working together took quite a few adjustments!

For our first draft, our producer, Malia, stepped in to see what she could come up with, once she had a draft, we saw what elements we liked and which elements needed some changes and passed it on to a different composer.

Music/Sound: Work in Progress

With a new music composer on board, and a wonderful sound team behind the whole thing, "The Boy who Laughs at Rain" was ready to get down to business!

Director Peterson and producer Malia met with the entire sound crew every Sunday to go over voice acting, narration, sound effects and music progress!
